Scottish Music

Scotland has a proud musical tradition, interwoven with its history and culture. One of the oldest forms of Scottish music is thought to be Gaelic singing and harp playing. Later, the Great Highland Bagpipes appeared on the scene. The Scottish piping tradition is strongly connected to other forms of Scottish music such as the Gaelic singing of songs, stepdance, and the fiddle which appeared in Scotland in the 17th century. These components are part of the dance music which is played across Scotland at country dances ‘ceilidhs’, Highland balls and frequently at weddings. Group dances are performed to music provided typically by a dance band which may include fiddle, bagpipe, accordian, tin whistle, and percussion.
Vocal music is also popular in the Scottish musical tradition. There are ballads, generally sung by a lone singer with backing, or played on traditional instruments. There are many traditional folk songs, which are generally melodic, haunting or rousing.
At Scotland by the Yard we have endeavoured to bring you a wide array of Scottish music spanning all of its great cultural and historical genres.
