Sgian Dubh (Black Knife)
This small knife is know as a Sgian Dubh, pronounced (Skeen’ Doo) which has the literal translation of ’black knife’ Dhu meaning ‘black’ in Gaelic refers to the color of the handle which originally was made of a black hardwood. This very traditional item was originally hidden in the Highlanders armpit, concealed by his sleeve. Armpit being derived from the Gaelic ‘skeen-ochles’. Today, the flat edge is usually worn inserted in the top of the right kilt hose by right handed people. Scotland by the Yard has a variety of sgian dubhs. Stag horn handled for day wear to silver-mounted for evening wear. For safety reasons they all come with a blunt edge. They are perfect for adding the finishing touch to your kilt outfit.
